Do our children need more English & Maths?

18th February 2021

As supportive families we need to trust our schools and teachers to make the right call!  We have to move away from a ‘one size fits all’ mentality.

‘An extended school day’ is nothing new and  already exists in every school we work in for the children that need it. If it were offered to all we would use it as free childcare and is that really helping?

We have every faith in the teaching profession who are trained to meet the needs of all children in their care. Only the teacher in front of our child knows what they need and they are trained to close the gap if children fall behind.

This pandemic has hit every child in the country and therefore is anybody really behind?

We trust the teachers that know our children to support them through this. Nobody ever went into teaching to hold a child back and every teacher will have a plan to move our children forward.

As parents we are worried about the impact of this time away from school.

It is totally natural to feel like this.

As parents with children who are already struggling we feel panic that work needs to be done immediately to close any gaps that have broadened during lockdown.

It is totally natural to feel like this.

As parents with children who are excelling we feel that work needs to be done to extend their learning.

It is totally natural to feel like this.

As parents we cannot wait to get our children back to their normal routine with a balanced week of education and activities. We want our children to be stimulated, entertained  and engaged in active learning.

It is totally natural to feel like this.

As parents, this summer may seem the ideal time for catch up classes and more English and Maths lessons but is this really the right thing to do?

Here at Northern Arts Factory we believe our children need a summer of fun:

A time to see family

A time to meet friends

A time to enjoy the outdoors

A time to run and jump

A time to dance

A time to play sport

A time to sing

A time to feel alive

A time to swim

A time to do gymnastics

A time to feel like children.

The benefits of these activities to the social, emotional, physical and mental health of our children is powerful. They need to recharge and rebuild their confidence, ready to give English & Maths their best effort when September arrives.

Do our children need more English & Maths?

Trust their teachers, they will give them what they need❤
